I had the pleasure of attending the Small Shop Production Class at the American School of Luthiere in Sept, and came away a changed man. The school is run by Charles Fox, who has been building guitars since the 60’s and has been a major innovator in guitar production design and technique. Charles was extremely generous with his time and knowledge, and the whole experience was great. I learned a great deal about tool design, jigs and fixtures, repeatable results and had my standards raised overall. One of the days we visited three other luthier’s shops – Saul Koll, John Greven and Jeffrey Elliot. All three of these guys are long term, successful guitar builders, and all three have very different styles, and all three are very different from Charles. Thanks to everyone involved for helping me to have great week, and I know that I will be a better guitar builder for the experience.
