This stuff is called Friendly Plastic – we sometimes use it to create custom cauls for clamping unorthodox shapes (which is pretty common with guitars). It’s a simple process: we put the plastic in hot water to soften it, press it into shape (always using a layer of wax paper to protect the guitar), and wait for it to cool. This is great for when we make wood overlays to fix broken headstocks:
And there it is – clamped up nicely, with an even pressure across the overlay. With a properly made overlay, the headstock is stronger than ever before.
